Praising what is correct-is it good or bad for the student?
Praising everything that a student does correctly can set a high expectation.
If a student does something wrong or something that was
not as good a job as they have done in the past, they may
feel like they failed. This is not a healthy mindset for a
student.
Instead of using words such as
"great," teachers should strive to
use nonjudgmental vocabulary
such as "good thinking!" or "kiss
your brain."
Instead of showing students that they have
your "stamp of approval," you could ask
them questions about their ideas or work.
This will inspire them to further their
knowledge on the topic. Students will also
feel comfortable coming to you with ideas
and questions if they know that they will
not be judged for it.
Knowledge of Teaching and Learning
Are all students respectful to their fellow classmates?
Have class rules that create a comfortable learning environment
Model being respectful to others.
Thank students that are being respectful.
If there is a discipline issue with a student being disrespectful, I
would try using a self-evaluation chart.
Knowledge of Diversity
How can biases affect teaching?
Teachers should self evaluate to see if they have a bias in the first place.
If the teacher finds that they do have a bias, they
should think of ways to help themselves not use
that bias against a student.
Example of a self-evaluation question: Am I treating this student the
same way that I am treating all of my students?
Example of self-evaluation question: Am I treating this student
differently because I feel bad for this student?
It's important for teacher's to continue to self-evaluate throughout the year.
