Why was it created?
1. Changed ideas after WW2
  1. Evacuated children
    1. People were shocked by living conditions
  2. More unity between rich and poor
    1. Rich began to see how poor lived
      1. Unfair they couldn't get healthcare
        Everyone is equal so should get same
    2. Realised healthier = more work = more income
  3. The desire for 'something better'
  4. Soldiers more morale if knew family were okay back home
  5. The war had provided some free medical care

2. The Beveridge Report of 1942
  1. Showed disease was a problem that had to be tackled after the war
  2. Clement Atlee introduced this 'welfare state' he outlined when he became Prime Minister in 1945

Problems with the NHS
1. Was more expensive than planned
  1. Had to introduce costs for prescriptions in 1941
2. Getting more and more expensive
  1. People are living longer and requiring moretreatment and more expensive treatments
3. Some treatments are't available on the NHS
  1. E.g. some cancer treatments
Opposition
1. Some believed poor got 'something for nothing'
2. Doctors
  1. Thought wouldn't get paid as much
  2. Wanted freedom to treat patients privately
3. Solutions
  1. Bevan promised more hospitals/ equipment
    1. Was badly needed
  2. Allowed doctors to still have private patients
