Question Answer
SOCIAL Milgram (1963) Obedience Aim: to investigate what level of obedience pp's would show when an authority figure told them to administer electric shocks to another person.
Method: Controlled observation in which obedience was measured in terms of voltage given. PP was seen as obedient if they gave 450 volts. PP's: Obtained by newspaper advertisements, 40 males aged 20-50 from the New Haven area. Given $4.50 for taking part. Conducted at Yale Uni.
PP's were always the teacher (fixed lottery) and saw the learner being strapped to a chair and electrodes. PP's were given a 45 v trial to show it was real. PP's had to conduct a word test on the the learner and give him and electric shock, increasing every time he got a wrong answer. 15 v-450 v, increasing in 15's.
At 300 v the learner banged on the wall and there after, gave no response. If the pp turned to the experiment, he would insist they must continue. The study finished when the pp either refused to continue (disobedient) or reached 450 v (obedient). PP's were then debriefed.
100% of the pp's went to 300 v and 65% went to 450 v. 26/40 pp's were obedient and 14/40 were disobedient.
Extreme stress signs were shown such as sweating; trembling; nervous laughing and stuttering. 3 pp's had seizures. On completion, many obedient pp's sighed in relief, mopped their brows or nervously looked around for cigarettes. Some shook there heads in regret and some remained calm.
