Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) The measure of average earnings in relation to local prices.
Gender-Related Development Index (GDI) Measures achievements in the same dimensions as the HDI, but examines inequalities between men and women
Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) Measures whether a woman can take an active part in economic and political life.
Education Index Based on adult literacy rates, and the combined enrollment for primary, secondary, and tertiary schools.
Cumulative Causation Theory States that pre-industrial society has little regional differences, but rapid economic growth causes economic divergence. Trickle-down from core to periphery is a result.
Modernization Theory States that there are 5 stages to development: 1. Traditional Society 2. Pre-conditions of take-off 3. Take-off 4. Drive to Maturity 5. Age of high mass consumption
Gross National Income (GNI) The total value of goods and services produced within a country, together with the balance of income and payments from or to other countries.
Asian Tigers Four economies that were the first NICs and are associated with high growth rates and industrialization from 1960-1970: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan
Trading Blocs An arrangement among a group of nations to allow free trade between member countries but to impose tariffs on other countries wishing to trade with them. (i.e. the EU)
Fair/Ethical Trade Trade that attempts to be socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. Companies take responsibility for the wider impact of their business.
Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Labor-intensive manufacturing centers that involve the import of raw materials and the export of factory products.
Free Trade Zones Zones in which manufacturing does not have to take place in order to gain trading privileges; such zones have become characterized by retailing.
