Unconstitutional Unauthorized or not following the constitution of a country
Mandate A command or authorization, usually from electorate to representative
Townshend Acts Acts placed by Britain on the colonies to pay for British troops, including taxes and tariffs. These were seen as unconstitutional by the colonists because they did not have a say.
"Defense of the newly acquired Territories" Reference to the French and Indian War, where Britain fought French over the territories around Canada. As a result, the colonists had to pay high taxes to fund their "defence".
Inherent rights Known as unalienable rights, these rights are possessed by everyone at birth and cannot be taken away
Separation of power Listed in the Virginia Declaration of Rights: " legislative and executive powers of the state should be separate and distinct from the judicative". Prevents too much power in one group.
Consent of the People Laws do not have any legitimacy if they are placed without the consent of the citizens. "consent of the representatives of the people"
Trial by Jury Citizens must have the right to be judged by their peers, if requested. "trial by jury is preferable to any other and ought to be held sacred"
