Question Answer
What is the most plentiful atom on the earth's surface Oxygen
What is oxygen an energy source for? development of cellular life
Oxygen must be administered: 1. With just cause 2. Properly 3. Safely
How does oxygen move through the body? It passes from our lungs (alveoli) into the blood through the pulmonary capillaries. Most of it then binds to the heme of the hemoglobin so it can be pumped through the heart to the tissues
4 things oxygen is good for 1. Cellular Respiration - mitochondrial metabolism (ATP) 2. Angiogenesis 3. Vasoactive 4. Immune function
Why is oxygen good for angiogenesis? Hypoxia promotes angiogenesis but the effect is enhanced by oxygen therapy & hyperbarics
What are hyperbarics? Who is it commonly used by? Oxygen therapy higher than atmospheric pressure. It's commonly used by athletes, diabetics & burn victims
Why is oxygen good for vasoactive? Oxygen causes vasoconstriction / dilation dependent on the site / concentration. (vasodilation is produced by hypoxia except in the lung vessels. - they will dilate in response to O2 rich alveoli)
Why is oxygen good for immune function? In the presence of O2: - anaerobic bacteria = INHIBITED - WBC functions = ENHANCED
Indications for oxygen therapy Hypoxemia, Hypoxia, and OCCASIONALY to decrease myocardial work load
What is hypoxemia? What is hypoxia? Hypoxemia - too LITTLE oxygen in the BLOOD Hypoxia- Not enough oxygen for proper cellular respiration -reduced oxygen in the TISSUES
Causes of hypoxemia -decreased alveolar oxygen tension -increased altitude (less ATM pressure) -Ventilation - perfusion mismatch via: shunt or deadspace
What is shunt? Blood with no air *train car analogy - train is running but the station is closed
What is deadspace? Air with no blood. The lungs are working fine but the capillaries around the alveoli are constricted / occluded *train car analogy - people can get in and out of the station but there is no running train
