There are lots of different type of decorative techniques...

Appliqué can be done in a variety of ways and is basically cutting out shapes from a fabric, and sewing them onto another fabric. It can add texture and colour to a fabric.Non-woven fabrics are often used in applique because they do not fray, and also can be cut in any direction, so a larger variety of shapes can be cut. Appliqué is popular in childrens products because they are soft to touch, and also do not have small pieces that would be harmful to children.

The first way is where a shape is cut out from a fabric, then pinned/tailor tacked/ attached to bondaweb and sewn onto the fabric in a variety of stitches, the most common is a close zigzag stitch. Bondaweb can make the fabric fray less and can also add bulk, and stop the fabric stretching when being sewn.

Padded appliqué is where wadding or stuffing is places in between the cut out fabric nd the main fabric. It adds bulk and depth as it creates a 3D effect.

Reverse appliqué is where a shape is cut out of the main fabric, and the other fabric is shown from beneath

ADVANTAGESIt strengthens the base layer by adding another layer. It also adds colour and texture to a large area. It can be sewn automatically using CAM maachines.  If template are used shapes can be repeatedly accurate, and also scraps of fabric can be used, rather than being wastedDISADVANTAGESIt adds thickness and weight to the product, and requires a lot of extra material.

Quilting is where wadding or stuffing is placed between two layers of fabric, which are then stitched together in straight lines/in a pattern.It is often used to give added warmth, like in an anorak or a duvet.

ADVANTAGESIt can add warmth to a product and create interesting 3D effects.DISADVANTAGESIt uses a lot of extra material, and it is time consuming.

Embroidery is where stitch is used decoratively to make a pattern.CAM embroidery machnes can be used to do it automatically.It can be done by handdifferent threads can be used to create different effects, and different stitches can also be used.

Adding beads and sequins can add to the texture and colour of a fabric and can also catch the light in interesting ways.
