  1. What is a textile component?
    1. Extras added to fabric used to make textile item. Without them - very difficult to make them.
      1. Pre-manufactured/home-made e.g. shoulder pads or covered buttons.
        1. Role is to aid construction (threads), allow for opening + closing (zip), add strength (interfacing), embellish (beads), insulate (wadding), add shape (shoulder pads) + improve quality of product.
          1. When choosing one, designer needs to consider care, cost, quality, aesthetic appeal, safety issues + end use.
          2. Components
            1. Sewing Threads
              1. Function: Hold fabric pieces together, add fastenings + decoration.
                1. E.g. - cotton, polyester, metallic + silk threads.
                2. Beads + Sequins
                  1. Decorate with colour, texture, catch light + add weight to product.
                    1. Plastic, wood + diamante.
                    2. Ribbon, bindings, cords + braids
                      1. Add decorative edgings or features. Used as ties + fastenings.
                        1. Fabric strips or different weights, patterns, widths + fires.
                        2. Interfacings
                          1. Aid sewing, add strength, give shape + structure or used as bonding glue.
                            1. Non-woven sew/iron-on (fusible) fabric or paper backed web-bonding (Bondaweb).
                            2. Pre-manufactured motifs
                              1. Speed up decorative processes + add feature.
                                1. School + team badges, children's animal motifs.
