FUNCTIONALISTS

Crime is inevitable and universal. Functionalists see too much crime as destableising society, but appreciate that it has positive functions. Ever society has some level of crime and deviance.

Crime is normal, an integral part of all healthy societies. Not everyone is equally effectively socialised into shared norms and values, so some individuals are more likely to deviate. Particularly in complex modern societies, there is a diversity of lifestyles and values. 

Difference groups develop their own subcultures with distinct values and norms, and what the members of the subculture regarded as normal, mainstream culture may see as deviant. 

BOUNDARY MAINTENANCE-- unites members of the communiy in cdemming its wrong doers and reinforces their commitment about shared norms and values.
