Cellular Respiration All organisms need energy. Carbohydrates, especially glucose, provide this energy through cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is the release of energy from energy-storing compounds. Can occur with oxygen (aerobic respiration) as shown or without oxygen (anaerobic respiration) INPUTS OUTPUTS Glucose + oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + water +available energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 36-38(ADP+P) -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36-38 ATP If there is insufficient oxygen available then anaerobic respiration occurs. In animals the by product is lactic acid or carbon dioxide and in plants the by product is alcohol. INPUTS OUTPUTS Plants Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy C6H12O6 -> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 + energy Animals Glucose -> Lactic acid + energy C6H12O6 -> 2c3H6O3 + energyPhotosynthesis is where plants convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy that can fuel organisms activities. INPUTS OUTPUTSCarbon Dioxide + water + energy -> Glucose + oxygen 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
