Instead of using salt when cooking season food with herbs and spices such as garlic, basil, pepper or thyme.

Make your own stock or gravy instead of using stock cubes or gravy granules.

Cut down on processed foods as they are often high in salt (salt is often added during processing to preserve the food and to add flavour)

Guidelines to Reduce Salt in the Diet

Cook food from scratch so you know exactly what is in your food.

Read food lables to check for salt content.

Reduce consumption of foods packged in brine as they are high in salt.

Cut down on fast foods and smoked or cure meat eg salami.

Choose fresh or frozen vegetables over canned varities as they often contain added salt to help increase shelf life.

If a recipe requires salt reduce the amount by half.
