Life Changes and Stages     People change when the discomfort they feel in the present is more than the fear of the future.   Changes of Stage: 1.       Pre Contemplation 2.       Contemplation 3.       Preparation 4.       Action 5.       Maintenance 6.       Termination   Pre Contemplation (not ready) ·         Clients do not intend to make any changes in the near future (6 months) ·         Clients may be unaware of the need for change ·         Clients learn about healthy behavior and are encouraged to think about pros/cons of change ·         People in this stage usually underestimate the pros of change and overestimate the cons ·         Often not self-aware enough to recognize their own unhealthy choices     Contemplation   ·         Clients are intending to start healthy behavior within the next 6 months or less ·         Pros and cons lists are usually about equal in length and\or weight ·         Ambivalence about changing can cause them to put off actually making change happen ·         Clients learn about the kind of person they could be if they changes ·         Clients are open to the idea of reducing the cons on their list   Preparation   ·         Clients are ready to start taking action within the next month or so ·         Clients start taking small steps toward positive change ·         Clients are open to start telling people about change they want to make ·         Clients main concern is possibility of failure ·         Encourage clients to be as prepared as possible for action they take so they can continue to grow\change   Action   ·         Clients have changed their behavior within the last 6 months ·         Clients need to continue working hard to move forward ·         Clients learn how to strengthen their commitments to change and fight urges to slip back ·         Teach clients strategies for ·         Substituting activities related to the unhealthy behavior with positive ones ·         Rewarding themselves for taking steps toward change\avoiding people situation that tempt them to step back   Maintenance   ·         Clients have changed their behavior 6 months ago or more ·         Clients should be aware of situations that may draw them back to unhealthy or old ways of behaving ·         Clients should be encouraged to : seek support from people they trust, spend time with people who have healthy behavior patterns, remember to engage in alternative activities to cope with stress Relapse: Regression happens when clients revert back to an earlier stage of change, can happen from any one stage to another, completely normal for people to regress at least once during the proves of change.     Termination   ·         New behavior has become a natural part of clients life ·         If coaching continues, new goals are chosen and a new set of stages begins       Progression of Change   Clients need the following for change: ·         Decisional balance: growing awareness that the advantages of change outweigh the disadvantages ·         Self-efficacy: confidence that they can make and maintain changes in situations that tempt them to return to their old behavior ·         Process of change strategies: 10 Strategies that can help clients make and maintain change   Process of Change Strategies 1.       Consciousness Raising-increasing awareness from information, education, and personal feedback about healthy behaviour 2.       Dramatic Relief-feeling  fear, anxiety, or worry because of the unhealthy behavior; feeling inspired when they hear about how others have changed in similar ways 3.       Self-Re-evaluation-realising the healthy behavior is an important part of who they want to be 4.       Environmental Re-evaluation-realizing how their unhealthy behavior affects others 5.       Social Liberation-realizing that society is more supportive of the healthy behavior 6.       Self-liberation-the client believing in their own ability to change; client making commitments to act on that belief 7.       Helping Relationships-0finding people who are supportive of their change 8.       Counter Conditioning-substituting healthy ways of acting and thinking for unhealthy ways 9.       Reinforcement Management-increasing reward that come from positive behavior and reducing those that come from negative behavior 10.   Stimulus Control-using reminders and cures that encourage healthy behavior     Moving Forward People will not move forward until                                 i.            They’re ready to move forward                               ii.            The present they are living in becomes more uncomfortable than the unknown in the change they are contemplating   Miracle Question:   If a miracle occurred overnight and you had the change you wanted, what would be the first thing you would notice?   Levels Of Consciousness Development   ·         We will always be looking for “something more” because we are always growing ·         Idea often comes across as an usatisifi9ed “the grass is always greener…” ·         If we are not moving forward, we are either moving backward, or becoming stagnant   Transformation: the act or process of being transformed; change in form, appearance, nature, or character; a radical change or alteration. Transformation: ·         We change in stages or steps ·         Steps can look the same, but they are actually much different from each other ·         Journaling can help clients create a benchmark to compare where they are at with where they used to be   Stages of Consciousness Development ·         Ego-Centric Self ·         Interpersonal of Socialized self ·         Independent Self ·         Integral (or Inter-individual) Self ·         Sacred Self   Ego-Centric Self: ·         From birth to about age 16 ·         This is where a person’s sense of self is created ·         Patterns of behavior are developed ·         Basis for relationship behavior is developed ·         About 15% of adults don’t make it past the ego-centric stage ·         Most people who don’t progress past this stage have been victims of trauma   The Independent Self ·         Major transition in life ·         Only 25% of people make this transformational process ·         People transform because they can no longer ignore the “call of the soul” ·         People must come to understand that their purpose/goal/value is not wrapped up in what society says about you, but who/how God created you to be ·         Challenge: create an internal self where self-reflection happens ·         Authenticity becomes key ·         Self-expression and cooperation become new organizing principles     Interpersonal Of Socialized Self ·         Most people function in this stage ·         People identify themselves in whatever role they take in society-mother, father, provider, teacher, etc. (“I am my role”) ·         This stage brings with it a sense of belonging and perceived stability ·         When the role is gone, the persons sense of identity is gone with it and people then have to find a way to redefine themselves ·         Goals/behaviors are pre-determined by others (family, employers, society in general) ·         Most people have learned to stifle desires they have ·         It can be scary to venture out of this stage for the first time     Integral (Or Inter-Individual) Self ·         Text says that only about 1% of adults reach this stage ·         14% of adults are in the process of getting to this stage ·         People begin to understand the contest in which they operate as individuals-they are parts of a whole but not determined by it ·         Realization that they have many facets of their personality-who they are in various contests ·         Realization there is no need to be perfect, or even whole or complete ·         Gain the ability to see others as people who operate out of the context of where they are and where they came from   Sacred Self ·         Text says spirituality becomes a part of who the person sees themselves to be ·         Person identifies themselves with the soul Person identifies their personality with the soul, as opposed to their physical bodies
