  1. Pathophysiology

    • Inflammation of the bronchi

      • Commonly viral: adenovirus, parainfluenza, influenza, coronavirus, rhinovirus, coxsackie, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
      1. Bacterial Causes

        • Bacterial Causes: Less Common S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, mycoplasma
      2. Presentation
        1. Cough

          Annotations:

          • Present for at LEAST 5 days, usually lasts 1-3 weeks
          1. Dyspnea, wheezing, rhonchi
            1. Runny nose, low grade fever, malaise, sore throat
              1. Hemoptysis
              2. Diagnostics
                1. CLINICAL Dx
                  1. No imaging required

                    Annotations:

                    • CXR usually normal/nonspecific 
                  2. Management
                    1. Supportive tx

                      Annotations:

                      • Tx sx w/ fluids, antitussives, antipyretics, analgesics
                      1. Abx not usually indicated
                      2. Complications

                        Annotations:

                        • The following complications occur in ~10% of patients with acute bronchitis
                        1. Bacterial Superinfection
                          1. Pneumonia

                            • Develops in ~5% of pts with bronchitis (incidence of subsequent PNA, unaffected by abx tx)
                            1. Chronic Bronchitis

                              • May develop with repeated episodes of acute bronchitis
