Question Answer
What is Classification? Classification is the process of putting things into groups.
What is Weed? a plant growing where its not wanted
What are pest species? A pest is any living organism which is invasive or prolific (present in large numbers or quantities)
Why do scientists classify? Scientists classify organisms to make them easier to study.
What is Taxonomy? the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematics.
Who are taxonomists? A taxonomist is a biologist that groups organisms into categories.
What are reptiles? a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that includes snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, and tortoises
What are Amphibians? a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, and caecilians.
What is an animal? a living organism which feeds on organic matter.
What are Vertebrates? an animal that has a back bone.
What are Invertebrates? an animal lacking a backbone.
What is a mammal? a warm-blooded vertebrate animal that has possession of hair or fur. females can secrete milk for the nourishment of the young
What is a fish? a limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal with gills and fins.
What is a dichotomous key? A dichotomous key is a series of choices that leads to the identification of an object.
Which animal is the mammal in this picture? Kangaroo because it has all the characteristics of a mammal.
What is Phylum? a principal taxonomic category that ranks above class and below kingdom.
What is a kingdom? it is the 1st level of classification.
What is an Agnatha? a group of primitive jawless vertebrates which includes the lampreys, hagfishes, and many fossil fishlike forms.
What are Chordates? Animals with a nerve cord running down their backs, and an endoskeleton.
What is an endoskeleton? A skeleton inside the body
What is an exoskeleton? a rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals.
What are Poriferans? an aquatic invertebrate animal of the phylum Porifera (a sponge).
What are Cnidarians? an aquatic invertebrate animal of the phylum with radial symmetry and only one body opening.
What are Echinoderms? a marine invertebrate of the phylum Echinodermata, such as a starfish, sea urchin, or sea cucumber.
What are Annelids? a segmented worm of the phylum Annelida, such as an earthworm or leech.
What is Radial Symmetry? A cut in any direction through the middle will result in identical halves.
What is Bilateral Symmetry? There is only one position where a cut produces identical halves.
What are Nematodes? a worm of the large phylum Nematoda, such as a roundworm or threadworm.
What is Molluscs? an invertebrate of a large phylum which includes snails, slugs, mussels, and octopuses.
What are Platyhelminths? a phylum of invertebrates that comprises the flatworms.
What are Arthropods? an invertebrate animal of the large phylum Arthropoda, such as an insect, spider, or crustacean.
What are Chondrichthyes? a class of fishes that includes those with a cartilaginous skeleton.
What are Osteichthyes? a class of fishes that includes those with a bony skeleton.
What are Placentals? Mammals that nourish the baby inside the mothers body by a placenta and the baby is born at a more mature state.
What are Monotremes? Monotremes are mammals that lay eggs.
What are Marsupials? a mammal of an order whose members are born incompletely developed and are typically carried and suckled in a pouch on the mother's belly.
What are cells? The building blocks of all living things
What are Conifers? Plants that bear their seeds on cones and have male and female cones on the same tree.
What are Cycads? Plants that bear their seeds in cones and have male and female cones on separate plants.
What are decomposers? Decomposers are organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down the organic matter in the dead bodies of plants and animals.
What is Divison? The level below kingdom in the classification of plants.
What are ferns? Plants that reproduce using spores and have a vascular system for transporting food and water throughout plants.
What are flowering plants? Plants that produce seeds fully protected inside an ovary.
What are Flagellum? A Flagellum is a whip-like structure that allows a cell to move.
What is Fungus or Fungi? multicellular and unicellular organisms with a cell wall as the outer covering and a distinct nucleus.
What are Multicellular organisms? Multicellular organisms are organisms that consist of more than one cell.
What are Unicellular organisms? A unicellular organism, also known as a single-celled organism, is an organism that consists of only one cell
What are Ginkgos? Tree with separate male and female plants.
What are Liverworts? Plants with no vascular tissue that reproduce using spores.
What is the meaning of microscopic? Something that cannot be seen without the help of a microscope.
What is Macroscopic? visible to the naked eye; not microscopic.
What is Monera? One of the 5 kingdoms of living things single-celled organisms without a distinct nucleus.
What are Mosses? Plants with no vascular tissue that reproduce using spores?
What is protist? One of the five kingdoms of living things; single-celled organisms with a distinct nucleus.
What are seed-producing plants? Plants that reproduce using seeds.
What are sporangia? special structures in which spores are produced.
What are spores? Single cells that grow into a new moss plant, fern or fungus.
What is Class? The level under phylum in the classification of living things.
What is Family? The level in classification system below order and above genus?
What is Genus? The level in classification system below family and above species.
What is Order? The level of classification system below class and above family,
What is Species? The last level of classification.
