Question Answer
Reaction Time "Is the ability to respond to a stimulus quickly. A reaction can be simple or it can involve choice" Simple reaction time - delay between the stimulus and our action. It is not possible to improve this through training, we need a good nervous system to send and retrieve messages to and from the brain, so we may contract quickly. Choice reaction time - is the delay between the stimulus and action which involves choice. We can improve through a lot of practice and training. Using our senses to receive stimuli and report to the brain. Movement time - is the time take to take action when the decision has been made. Requires quick and powerful fast twitch fibers. We can improve by increasing our muscular power. Sprinters need this to react to the gun. Fielders to react to the hit. Dropping a ruler: someone else drops a ruler; you must be looking straight ahead; catch the ruler as quickly as possible.
Speed "Is the ability to move all or part of the body as quickly possible" Supply energy to the contracting muscles quickly. Muscles then contract in the shortest time possible. Anaerobic energy supply system. A high number of fast twitch fibers gives an advantage. Cannot increase the number of fast twitch fibers but can train them to become stronger and to contract more powerfully. Improve: *Reaction Time *Agility *Copibility with lactic acid *Skill in sport to become more fluent Short distance sprinters 50m Speed Test
Agility "Is the ability to change the direction of the body at speed"
Co-ordination "Is the ability to carry out a series of movements smoothly and efficiently" Nervous and muscular system must work well together Improves: *With practice *Hand-eye, foot-eye, whole-body co-ordination *Good coaching and regular practice Juggling: start with two balls then with practice increase the number of tennis balls and/or increase the speed Skillful performances such as triple somersaults Alternate hand wall toss: stand 2m from a wall; throw a tennis ball from your right hand at the wall and catch with the left hand; then throw against the wall with your left and catching it with your right; repeat for 30seconds as quickly as possible
Balance Static Balance "Is the ability to maintain our equilibrium when stationary" Dynamic Balance "Is the ability to maintain our equilibrium when moving" Keeping the center of gravity over the area of support We keep balanced through our senses and proprioceptive organs in our joints Improve: *With practice/training *Competitive situations Gymnastics and Snow boarding Stork Stand:hands on hips;lift one leg to other knee; toes to knee; on command lift onto you toes and time until the drop of heal or the other foot Be watched at a competitive sport
