Question Answer
3.3 Circulation By: Roqaiah Ali 8B
What is the circulatory system? The system that carries materials around the body.
What does the circulatory system consists of? - Heart - Blood vessels - Blood
What are the three different types of blood vessels in your body? - Arteries - Capillaries - Veins
What is an artery? A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
What happens if the artery is cut? The high pressure within in it causes blood to spurt out very quickly.
What is a pulse? The regular expansion and contraction of the arteries in response to the heartbeat.
What are capillaries? The narrowest type of blood vessel.
How thick are capillary walls? 1 cell thick.
What are veins? The blood vessels that carries blood back to the heart.
What is a thrombus? A blood clot.
How are bruises formed? Tiny capillaries near the skin burst and the blood leaks out into the surrounding tissue. After that a red mark appears when blood has leaked into a tissue.
How large is your heart? About the size of your fist.
Where is your heart situated in? In the middle of your chest, behind the breastbone.
What type of muscle is your heart made out of? Cardiac muscle.
Why is the circulatory system referred to as a double system? There are two separate circuits through which blood flows.
What happens in one circuit? - Blood flows from the heart to the body and back to the heart. - Carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide and waste away from the cells.
What happens in the second circuit? Blood flows from the heart to the lungs and back.
What is deoxygenated blood? Blood with very little oxygen and lots of carbon dioxide.
What is oxygenated blood? Blood rich in oxygen.
Why should oxygenated and deoxygenated blood be separate where the two circuits meet in the heart? So the circulatory system works?
What is the septum? The thick wall that divides the heart in two.
What does one half of the heart collect? Oxygenated blood.
What does the other half collect? Deoxygenated blood.
What are the three main phases of a heartbeat? 1. The 2 atria contract, pushing blood down into the ventricles. 2. The ventricles contract, forcing blood out of the heart to the body and lungs. 3. The heart muscle relaxes and the atria fills with blood
What does ECG stand for? Electrocardiogram.
What is a plaque? A mixture of cholesterol, calcium and fibrin that can build up on the inside of arteries and reduce blood flow to the heart.
What is angina? Severe chest pain caused by lack of oxygen being supplied to heart muscle.
What is cholesterol? A fatty chemical that can cause blockages in arteries.
What are 4 things found in blood? - Red blood cells - White blood cells - Platelets - Plasma
What is haemoglobin? The pigment that gives red blood cells their colour.
