Describe evidence that prejudice exists Discrimination: most commonly observable form of prejudice. Occurs at the level of the individual, but is often only measured at the level of the group. 1) Probability of being convicted of murder in Florida 2) Price of cars offered to different individuals 3) Teachers marking boys' and girls' work 4) Interpreting ambiguous shove scenario
Describe the effects of prejudice Prejudice lowers self-esteem and creates self-fulfilling properties 1) Black kids rejecting Black Barbie 2) Women rating "Male" authors higher 3) Examination of interviewing behaviours (belief creates reality)
Describe possible causes of prejudice 1) Negative presentation in the media 2) In-group/out-group bias (remembering characteristics of each group) 3) Attribution errors/situational misattributions (photograph of group discussion) 4) Scapegoat theory
Describe methods for reducing prejudice 1) Contact hypothesis: increasing exposure to members of out-group can increase positive evaluations of the out-group and decrease prejudice and stereotyping. Needs: equal status members, common goals, intergroup cooperation, support of a legitimate authority (social norms).
