Indications Oedema due to heart failure, renal impairment, liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome
Action Inhibits reabsorption of sodium & chloride in the ascending limb of the loop of henle
Therapeutic effect Fast-acting, short duration diuresis
Absorption 60% of oral dose in absorbed in GIT
Distribution Easily crosses placenta and enters breastmilk
Metabolism & excretion Metabolised in the liver and excreted through the kidneys (urine)
half-life two hours
Contraindications & precautions - pregnancy - gout - anuria - prostatic obstruction - dehydration - Allergy to sulphonamides
Adverse reactions Can cause orthostatic hypotension, polyuria, dizziness, electrolyte imbalance & dehydration
Nursing assessment implications - BP - FBC - Weight
Education - Take in morning/ early afternoon at latest to avoid nocturia - take with food - Caution about dizziness when standing
