Question Answer
Step 1. Using a measuring cylinder, measure out 150cm3 of H2O. Pour the water into the beaker. Record the initial temperature of the water to the nearest 0.5'c
Step 2. Add methanol to the spirit burner. Weigh the spirit burner containing the methanol.
Step 3. Place the spirit burner under the beaker, light the burner and burn the liqid fuel whilst stirring the water with the thermometer.
Step 4. After about 3 minutes extinguish the flame and immediately record the maximum 'c reached by the water
Step 5. Re-weigh the spirit burner containing the methanol. Assume that the wick has not been burnt.
Inaccuracies in experimental data (3) Heat lost to surroundings other than water Incomplete combustion of methanol Evaporation of methanol from the wick
How to prevent evaporation from wick? Weigh burner as soon as possible after flame extinguished use spirit burner cover
How to prevent heat loss? Draught screen
Incomplete combustion? Input O2 gas
What can you determine from this experiment? Enthalpy change of a liquid fuel
