Topic 4.1 Oscillations Lesson 2 SHM - Motion and Energy Graphs

Textbook References: Hamper HL Textbook: pp 154 - 155, pp 158 - 159, p 161 (Phase); Oxford Textbook: Task #1 (i) Download this Mass Oscillating on a Vertical Spring video and import it into Logger Pro. (Remember to select "Insert", "Movie", then browse to your file.) (ii) Use the "Set Origin" tool to set the origin at the point where the bottom of the hook attaches to the body of the 100g mass. After selecting the "Set Origin" tool, just click on this point, then select the "Add Point" tool. (iii) Make a track for 5 or more complete oscillations by using the "Add Point" tool to plot successive positions of the this same point on the oscillating mass. (You don't need to use the ruler tool to set a real world distance as we are only interested in the shapes of the motion graphs we are about to make.) (iV) Use this track to view, then copy and past into word, separate graphs of: (A) y-displacement versus time (B) y-velocity versus time Task #2 Download and view this Principles of SHM ppt and check your results against the graphs shown here. Task #3 Look at these webpages: http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/feschools/waves/shm.php http://www.studyphysics.ca/2007/20/04_waves/44_a_v_T_SHM.pdf Plenary: Log in to your GoConqr account a make a quick mindmap of today's lesson. You could work with a partner on this. Homework: View this Simple Pendulum video. (i) Use the readings (period, T) recorded and displayed on the light gates and the lengths (l) shown (top right corner) for the pendulum to create a Logger Pro graph of T^2 verus l. (ii) Find the value for the gradient of the straight line of best fit. (iiI) Comment on this value. Look at your textbook or the Study Physics notes before commenting.
