Art. 51: The right to self defence is available until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to restore international peace and security.
Art. 2(4): All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations. This is a rule of jus cogens.
Art. 42: The Security Council may take such military actions as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security.
Art. 53: The Security Council may utilise regional organisations, such as the OAS, OAU and NATO, for 'enforcement action'. No enforcement shall be taken under regional arrangements or by regional agencies without the authorisation of the Security Council. Art. 55: aims at creating "conditions of stability and well-being which are necessary for peaceful & friendly relations among nations based on respect for the priciple of equal rights and self-determination of peoples".

Art. 11(2): The General Assembly may discuss questions relating to the maintenance of international peace and security and make recommendations but any such question on which action is necessary shall be referred to the Security Council.
Art. 12: Designed to prevent clashes between the two bodies; it provides that, while the S.C. is exercising its functions with regard to a particular dispute or situation, the G.A. shall not make any recommendation unless the S.C. so requests.
