        2. Taking a break from the trial, Scout and Dill talk with Mr Raymond outside the courthouse.
          1. Mr Raymond lives happily with a black woman, yet he pretends that his is permanently drunk in order to escape the pressure from townspeople who would not believe he chooses to live that way.
          2. Despite the overwhelming evidence that Tom was innocent, the all-white jury convicts him.
            1. All the blacks in the balcony stood as respect for Atticus as he left the courtroom.
