  1. increase of IOP (>20mmHG) by excessive accumilation of aqueous humor
    1. normal IOP: 10-20mmHG
    2. Two types of Glaucoma
      1. Acute (close/narrow angle)
        1. acute/ SUDDEN marked increase in IOP
          1. etiology: aging, trauma, infection, drugs
            1. - Patient will feel heaviness in eyes -eye pain, N/V, headache
        2. Chronic (open angle)
          1. insidious (gradual) onset
            1. etiology: aging in peoples >50 years
              1. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
                1. early signs:
                  1. increase IOP, blurred vision
                  2. late signs:
                    1. - peripheral vision loss - appearance of halos
          2. 2nd leading cause of blindness
            1. Diagnostic Tests
              1. Tonometer: to measure IOP
              2. RISK FACTORS:
                1. family history of glaucoma, family history of diabetes, previous vision problems, medication use
