HYDRO POWER
Hydro" means "water" in Greek
Hydro-power or water power is power derived from the energy of falling water and running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes
Uses
irrigation
watermills, sawmills, textile mills
dock cranes, domestic lifts
To generate electricity.
Hydroelectricity.
Advantages
Dams are designed to last many decades and so can contribute to the generation of electricity for many years / decades.
If electricity is not needed, the gates can be shut, stopping electricity generation.
Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be produced at a constant rate.
When in use, electricity produced by dam systems do not produce green house gases.
Often large dams become tourist attractions
Disadvantages
Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected, which can have an impact on plant life
The dams are very expensive to build
Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, causing problems for animals that used to live there.
Finding a suitable site can be difficult - the impact on residents and the environment may be unacceptable.
Electricity generated by hydropower
16 percent of global electricity
Some countries which utilize it.
USA,
China
Brazil
Pakistan
Advantages of hydropower
Does not emit greenhouse gases such as CFCs or methane etc. thus reducing global warming
It’s renewable and can be utilized for generations to come
Much more reliable than wind or solar power.
