Popular Culture and Patriotism
- There were opportunities for Germans to express national pride
A series of anniversairies in the 1860's which provided outlets for such feelings, births of poets; Schiller and Fichte were celebrated at fests
Increase in memberships of singing, shooting and gym clubs. (Clubs not allowed political involvement)
Members shared patriotic attitude and a desire for Greater German Unity

Schleswig- Holstein Crisis
-Biggest mobilsation of popular nationalism
Associations sprang up all over G. commitee of 36 established to lead campaign
Limitations of nationalist movement were clearly exposed; Aus and PR refused to recognise claims of Duke of Augustenburg
Caused Nationalverein and Reformverein to decline. Later totally collapsing, as the case for Grossedeutsch was undermined by success of Prussia.
Little influence popular nationalism had over the outcome of events
Many nationalists who welcomed the success of Prussia in creating the German Reich in 1871.
