The Demographic Transition Model

Definition
1. Suggests that all countries pass through similar DT stages or will do given time
2. Describes a sequence of changes over a period of time, between BR's, DR's and overall population
Advantages
1. Gives us a good generalised picture of population change over time
2. Gives us a picture for the future
3. Easy to compare different countries and their state of development
Disadvantages
1. Based on European countries (not LEDCs)
2. Original model didn't include stage 5
3. Doesn't include migration, major disasters, HIV or government polies
4. Doesn't give a timeline for how long each stage might take
Stages
1. Stage 1
  1. High stationary or pre-transition phase
  2. High death rates due to disease
    1. Consequently high birth rates to increase chances of survival
2. Stage 2
  1. Early expanding or early transition phase
  2. Death rate begins to decline with better living standards
  3. Birth rate remains high as children = labour
  4. Massive population growth
3. Stage 3
  1. Late expanding or mid-transition phase
  2. Improved technology in agriculture and industry, better education and birth-control
  3. Decline in birth and death rate
4. Stage 4
  1. Low stationary or late transition phase
  2. Low levels of fertility and mortality
  3. Minimal growth
5. Stage 5
  1. Birth rates fall below death rates
  2. Population decline
