WOUND HEALING
  1. WOUND: disruption of normal structure and function
    1. HEALING: results in restoration and function
    2. CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR HEALING
      1. Good nutritional status
        1. Good general health, free from systemic disease
          1. Good blood supply to provide, nutrition, oxygen and waste removal
            1. Freedom from contamination of toxins and foreign bodies
              1. Infection, immunosuppression, cancer, reduced blood supply impair healing
      2. HEALING BY PRIMARY INTENTION
        1. Simple, rapid process in a clean skin wound
          1. Damaged edges are in close proximity
            1. Damage is minimal
        2. 3 STAGES IN REPAIR PROCESS:
          1. INFLAMMATION: haemostasis, platelets aggregate and form fibrin clot
            1. Inflammatory phase, bacteria phagocytosed, clot infiltrated by PMN's
              1. Cytokines released, cause migration and division of cells
            2. PROLIFERATION: fibroblasts enter site
              1. Angiogenisis: new blood vessels form when endothelial cells migrate
                1. Collagen deposition and granulation tissue formation:
                  1. Fibroblasts lay down collagen matrix
                    1. Granulation tissue consist of new blood vessels+inflam cells
                      1. Epithelialisation:, e cells migrate to wound edges
                        1. Contraction: Myofibroblasts make wound smaller by contracting
              2. MATURATION AND REMODELLING
                1. Granulation tissue replaced by fibrous scar
                  1. arranging of collagen fibres for strenght
                    1. vascularity reduces, cells removed by apoptosis
