NEOPLASM: lesion often referred to as a tumour

1. BEHAVIOUR - BENIGN/MALIGNANT
  1. CELL ORIGIN - EPITHELIUM, CONNECTIVE, LYMPHOID TISSUE
CARCINOMA arising from epithelium
1. SARCOMA arising from connective tissue
CARCINOGENISIS
1. ONCOGENISIS: creation of benign and malignant tumours
  1. CARCINOGENISIS: malignancy - normal cells transformed to cancer cells
CHARACTERISTICS OF BENIGN
1. slow growing, non invasive, well defined do not metastisize
CARCINOMA IN SITU
1. epithelial neoplasm, exhibiting malignant signs, no metastatis
DYSPLASIA
1. may proceed carcinoma in situ
  1. abnormally formed cells, disordered differentiation
CHARACTERISTICS: MALIGNANT
1. grow rapidly, invade, poorly defined, metatstases
EPITHELIAL NEOPLASMS
1. BENIGN:PAPILLOMA - non glandular
  1. ADENOMA - GLANDULAR
    1. MALIGNANT:CARCINOMA
MESENCHYMAL
1. Tissue of origin: blood vessel
  1. benign: HAEMANGIOMA
    1. malignant: ANGIOSARCOMA
BENIGN CONNECTIVE TISSUE NEOPLASMS
1. LIPOMA: fatty tissue
  1. CHONDROMA: cartilage
    1. OSTEOMA: bone
      1. ANGIOMA: vascular origin
      2. FIBROMA: fibrous tissue
MALIGNANT CONNECTIVE TISSUE ORIGIN
1. LIPOSARCOMA
  1. OSTEOSARCOMA
    1. FIBROSARCOMA
2. CHONDROSARCOMA
  1. ANGIOSARCOMA
