Any immune response against a foreign antigen that is exaggerated beyond the norm
type I hypersensitivity or allergy
1. immediate or anaphylactic
2. localized or systemic
3. two part mechanism
  1. sensitization upon initial exposure
  2. degradation of sensitized cells
type II hypersensitivity
1. known as cytotoxic
2. cause by endogenous antigens or haptens
3. 3 syndromes
  1. blood transfusion
  2. hemolytic disease
  3. drug - induced hypersensitivity
type III hypersensitivity
1. immune complex
  1. localised immune complex disease
  2. systematic immune complex disease
type IV hypersensitivity
1. known as cell - mediated
2. occured in response to small chemical (hapten) encountered with skin (protein)
