Adaptations of flowering plants
  1. Xerophytes
    1. Low water availability
      1. Prevent waterloss
        1. Rolled leaves
          1. Reduces leaf area from which transpiration can occur
          2. Sunken stomata
            1. Reduces water potential gradient between surface of the leaf and the atmosphere
              1. Reduces rate of diffusion of water
            2. Thick cuticle
              1. Over leaf surface to reduce rate of cuticular transpiration
              2. Hairs
                1. Trap water vapour and reduce water potential gradient
              3. Marram grass
                1. Sand dune habitat
              4. Mesophytes
                1. Shed leaves before onset of winter
                  1. Aerial parts of non woody plants die off and due to frost/cold winds. Underground parts survive
                    1. Most annual mesophytes (flower, seed and die in 1 year) survive winter as dormant seeds
                      1. Rose
                        1. Survive unfavourable times of year
                        2. Hydrophytes
                          1. Water lily
                            1. Poorly developed xylem
                              1. Water is supportive medium (very little lignified tissue)
                                1. Submerged/partially submerged under water
                                  1. Upward facing stomata (on top of leaf)
                                    1. Little/no cuticle
                                      1. Large air spaces in stems and leaves (lots of CO2 and O2 available when submerged)
