OSI Model
  1. Open System Interconnection
    1. Defines how messages should be transmitted from one device to another
    2. Application (layer 7)
      1. Supports application and end user processes
        1. Partners identified, quality identified, user authentication and privacy considered
          1. Constraints on data syntax identified
            1. Application specific
            2. Presentation (Layer 6) - sometimes known as syntax layer
              1. Provides independence from differences in data representation (encryption)
                1. Translate from application to network format
                  1. Works to transform data into form that application layer can accept it
                    1. Encrypts data to be sent across a network
                    2. Session (Layer 5)
                      1. Establishes, manages and terminates connections between applications
                        1. Sets up, coordinates, and terminates exchanges between applications at each end.
                          1. Deals with session and connection coordination
                          2. Transport (Layer 4)
                            1. Provides transparent transfer of data between end systems, or hosts and is responsible for end to end error recovery and flow control
                              1. Ensures complete data transfer
                              2. Network (Layer 3)
                                1. Provides switching and routing technologies, creating logical paths known as virtual circuits for transmitting data from node to node
                                  1. Addressing, inter-networking, error handling, congestion control and packet sequencing
                                  2. Data Link (Layer 2)
                                    1. Data packets encoded and decoded into bits.
                                      1. Handles errors in physical layer, flow control and frame sync
                                      2. 2 sub-layers
                                        1. Media Access Control (MAC)
                                          1. Controls how network gains access to data and permission to transmit it
                                          2. Logical Link Control (LLC)
                                            1. Controls frame sync, flow control and error checking
                                        2. Physical (Layer 1)
                                          1. Coveys bit stream
                                            1. Electrical impulse, light or radio signal
                                              1. Provides hardware means of sending and receiving data on a carrier
                                            2. Benefits
                                              1. Independent of country
                                                1. Any hardware/ software that meets OSI standard can communicate
                                                  1. Consumers have a wider range of choice
                                                    1. Not dependant on operating system
