Resource summary

Carbohydrates
  1. Made of monomers called monosaccharides
    1. Eg : Glucose, Galactose, Fructose
    2. C6H12O6
      1. Two monosaccharides can be joined together to make disaccharides
        1. Eg : maltose, lactose, sucrose
          1. Alpha glucose +Alpha glucose= Maltose (enzyme used maltase)
            1. Glucose + Galactose= Lactose (enzyme used lactase)
              1. Glucose +fructose=Sucrose (enzyme used sucrase)
              2. A bond between two monosaccharides are called glycosidic bond
              3. Many monosaccharides are joined together to make polysaccharides
                1. Eg : starch, glycogen, cellulose
                2. reaction that splits and joins monosaccharides are called hydrolysis and condensation respectively
                  1. Condensation joins glucose by producing water to join the carbon and oxygen at the opposite ends
                    1. Glycosidic bond is created
                    2. Hydrolysis is splitting polymers by addding water to seperate bonds
                      1. Glycosidic bond is broken
