  1. 1. SAY
    1. Let's look first at the verbs we've already talked about. The basic verb pattern for using 'say' for reported speech is: say + (that) + clause
      1. She said (that) she had already eaten.
        1. The direct speech for this is "I've already eaten"
    2. 2. TELL
      1. On the other hand, with 'tell' we need to use an object, a person who we tell the information to. See also my page about the difference between 'say' and 'tell' here. tell + someone + (that) + clause
        1. I told John (that) I had seen the new film.
          1. The direct speech for this is "I've seen the new film"
        2. When we are reporting orders, we can also use another pattern with 'tell': tell + someone + to + infinitive
          1. She told the children to go to bed.
        3. 3. ASK
          1. We use 'ask' to report questions or requests. For questions we use the pattern: ask + someone + if / question word + clause
            1. I asked my boss if I could leave early
            2. For requests we use the pattern: ask + someone + to + infinitive
              1. I asked Lucy to pass me the salt.
            3. 4. ADVISE
              1. Give someone advice. Notice the different spelling for the verb and the noun.
                1. Advise + someone + to + infinitive
                  1. She advised him to see a doctor.
                  2. Advise + (that) + clause
                    1. The staff advise that you carry water at all times.
                    2. Advise + against + verb-ing
                      1. I'd advise against leaving early.
                  3. 5. AGREE
                    1. Agree + to + infinitive
                      1. We agreed to meet the following day.
                      2. Agree + (that) + clause
                        1. I agreed that the children could do their homework later.
                      3. 6. APOLOGISE
                        1. Apologise + (to + someone) + for + verb-ing
                          1. They apologised to us for being late.
                          2. Apologise (+ to + someone) + for + noun
                            1. She apologised for the delay.
                          3. 7. DECIDE
                            1. Decide + to + infinitive
                              1. They decided to go to the cinema.
                              2. Decide + (that) + clause
                                1. They decided that they would go to the cinema.
                              3. 8. ENCOURAGE
                                1. Encourage + someone + to + infinitive
                                  1. She encouraged him to take the exam again.
                                2. 9. EXPLAIN
                                  1. Explain + (that) + clause
                                    1. The teacher explained that the course was finished.
                                    2. Explain + noun + to + someone
                                      1. She explained the grammar to the students.
                                      2. Explain + question word + to + infinitive
                                        1. They explained how to buy a train ticket on the internet.
                                        2. Explain + question word + clause
                                          1. We explained what the exams would cover.
                                        3. 10. INSIST
                                          1. Insist + on + verb-ing
                                            1. He insisted on paying.
                                            2. Insist + (that) + clause
                                              1. He insisted that we sit down.
                                            3. 11. PROMISE
                                              1. Promise + to + infinitive
                                                1. He promised to arrive early.
                                                2. Promise + (someone) + (that) + clause
                                                  1. I promised him that I wouldn't do it again.
                                                3. 12. RECOMMEND
                                                  1. Recommend + verb-ing
                                                    1. I recommend visiting the British Museum while you're in London.
                                                    2. Recommend + (that) + clause
                                                      1. I recommend that you visit the British Museum
                                                    3. 14. SUGGEST
                                                      1. Suggest + verb-ing
                                                        1. I suggest leaving soon
                                                        2. Suggest + (that) + clause
                                                          1. I suggest that you come as soon as you can.

                                                          1. Remind + someone + to + infinitive
                                                            1. She reminded him to take his keys.
                                                            2. Remind + someone + (that) + clause
                                                              1. They reminded me that there is a party tonight.

                                                                1. I warned them not to go in the water.
