Question Answer
Mineral An inorganic solid that occurs naturally and has a definite chemical composition and structure
Streak The color of a mineral in its powder form
Luster How light is reflected from the surface of a mineral
Density The mass of a substance divided by its volume (how heavy it feels compared to other materials)
Mohs scale Ranks the hardness of minerals from 1 to 10, with 1 being softest and 10 being the hardest
Hardness A minerals ability to resist scratching
Color <--- wrong spelling Certain wavelengths of light are absorbed, resulting in a combination of wave lengths that reach the eye
6.1 When Substances Change Why Did You Flip?
Physical Change A change that does not result in a new substance being produced
Boiling A change of state where a liquid is heated and changes to a gas within the liquid
Chemical Change A change that results in a new substance being formed
Condensation A change of state where a gas is cooled and forms a liquid
Contraction A decrease in size
Deposition A change of state from gas to solid
Endothermic (I Don't Know What It Is) Just Added It To Make It Look Cool Describes a process that absorbs energy from the surroundings
Evaporation The change of state where a liquid changes to a gas at the surface of the liquid
Exothermic [Another One] Describes a process that gives off energy in the form of heat, light or sound
Expansion An increase in size
Freezing The change of state from liquid to a solid
Melting The change of state when a solid is heated and forms a liquid
Precipitate A solid formed during a chemical change
Solidification The change of state from liquid to solid
Solution A mixture where the substances are mixed on the atomic level
Sublimation A change of state from solid to gas
