There are three types of textiles fibres Natural fibres Synthetic and regenerated
What do Synthetic and regenerated fibres have in common? They are continuous filament fibres
Natural fibres are usually short staple fibres. What fibre is an exception to this rule? Why is it? Silk It's a continuous filament
Where do natural fibres come from? Plants and animals.

What do Acrylic, Nylon and Polyester come from? Oil
What are used in Synthetic fibre manufacturing? Plant materials and Minerals
Where do regenerated fibres come from? Pine trees and Chemicals
Define: Handle how a textile feels when touched such as soft, rough, smooth, warm or cool
Define: Drape the supple and flexible characteristics of a fabric - how it hangs or behaves when pleated or folded
Define: Poo / Good Absorbency Able to take in and hold moisture and consequently drying properties
Define: Durable able to withstand wear, especially as a result of weathering
Define: Breathable Can let perspiration out and air in
Define: Lustrous a fabulous shine
Define: Fibre is made from yarns either through knitting, weaving or bonding

Define: Biodegradable Can be broken down naturally through the action of bacteria
Define: Bonded webs of fibre pressed together using adhesives or heat
Define: Closed-loop process A manufacturing process where all waste is reduced in the production system
Define: Blended Fibre Two or more fibres spun together in the production of the fabric
Define: Mixed Fibres Two or more fibres spun together in the production of the fabric
Define: Organic Fibres Fibres grown using natural fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides to protect the biodiversity of the environment and workers' health
Define: Recyled the product has been re-used in some form
Define: Recycled The product has been re-used in some way
Define: Target market the end-user or consumer group to whom the manufacturer aims to sell
When choosing materials, why is it important that they are fit for purpose? A fabric needs to be appropriate quality and cost to ensure it suits the target market
