Question | Answer |
Attrition | When rocks hit and bounce off each other. Process of erosion. |
Swash | the forward movement of a wave up a beach. |
Fetch | the distance of open water which a wave travels. |
Backwash | the backward movement of water down a beach. |
Constructive wave | a powerful wave with a strong swash & weak backwash. Deposits material. |
Destructive wave | a strong wave that erodes the coastline. |
Cliff | a steep or vertical face of rock often found at the coast. |
Retreat | the collapse of a cliff face as it moves in land. |
Hydraulic Action | Force of moving water |
Abrasion | the effect of rocks being flung at the cliff by powerful waves. |
Wave-cut platform | a wide, gently sloping rocky surface at the foot of a cliff. Marks the base of the old cliff before it retreated inland. |
Wave-cut notch | a small indentation (or notch) cut into a cliff by coastal erosion roughly at the level of high tide. |
Overhang | Refers to the heavy piece of rock left hanging when a notch is created in a cliff face. |
Compressed air | Process of erosion. Air is forced into tiny cracks. The air expands and causes tiny explosions. |
Sea Cliff Erosion Hydraulic action Compressed air Abrasion Wave cut platform Notch Overhang & retreat
Longshore drift Process of transport Zig/zag pattern In at acute angle Washes straight back out Dictated by wind strength & direction
Sea arch After sea cave before sea stump Erosion Hydraulic action Abrasion Cave erodes all the way through a headland.
Sea cave Erosion Hydraulic action Compressed air Abrasion Before sea arch Hole in a headland Blowhole can form on cave roof.
Blowhole Erosion Compressed air Roof of cave to surface Spray McSweeney's Gun Donegal
Storm beach | |
Tombolo Deposition Long shore drift Joins mainland to island Visible at low tide not high
Sand Bar & Lagoon Deposition Long shore drift Sand spit grows to make bar Bar cuts off bay Bay becomes lagoon May drie out over time
Sand spit Deposition Long shore drift When coastline changes shape May create a bar Will arch due to waves direction
Groyne Coastal defense Stop Long shore drift Right angles to beach Wood Traps sediment
Blowhole | Channel connecting roof of a cave to the surface. |
Sea cave | A narrow opening in to a headland |
Sea arch | When a sea cave is eroded all the way through a headland |
Sea stack/stump | When the roof of an arch collapses leaving a stack in the water. When it is eroded over time its is called a sea stump. |
Fore-shore | Part of beach closest the water. Smallest material found here. |
Back shore | Part of beach farthest away from the water. |
Storm beach | Where the biggest & heaviest stones are deposited during a storm. |
Beach | A collection of sand, shingle and stones. Usually found in a sheltered bay. |
Long shore drift | Process of marine transportation. |
Bay | Area of soft rock eroded into the coastline. |
Headland | Area of hard rock that is slow to be broken down. It sticks out into the ocean. |
Coastal Management | How humans manage coastal processes like erosion & long shore drift. |
Groyne | Wall built at right angles to coastline to stop LDS. |
