push factors from rural: population growth, war and conflict, natural disasters, cash crops, health, lack of services, agricultural problems. pull factors to urban: employment prospects, access to services such as health care and education, better quality of life, better social diversity.
global pattern of urbanisation: almost 50% of people live in towns and cities, 19% of us live in cities with over 1 million inhabitants, there are currently 20 mega cities, this is due to rapid urbanisation over the past 50 years as the LEDCs have been developing. reasons for the urbanisation process: agricultural revolution-fewer people needed to work the land, industrial revolution- brought people into towns-explosion in consumer goods-better means of transport-growth of economy, Knowledge revolution-crop yield increased-enough food available for people in cities-food prices fell-healthier population meant a decline in deaths so city population continue to thrive.
