Jawaharlal Nehru 1889-1964 Indian statesman and leader with Gandhi in the struggle for home rule; was the first prime minister of the Republic of India from 1947 to 1964.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah 1876-1948 Founder and first governor-general (1947-1948) of Pakistan. When India's independence from Britain was imminent, he feared the Muslim minority would be oppressed by the Hindus and insisted on a Muslim homeland, founded in 1947 as Pakistan.
Annie Beasant 1847-1933 A prominent British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule.
Gopal Krishna Gokhale 1866-1915 Indian political leader and social reformer, president of the Indian National Congress from 1905. He was a leading advocate of Indian self-government through constitutional or moderate means.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak 1865-1920 An Indian nationalist, teacher, social reformer, lawyer and an independence activist. He was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement.
Michael O'Dwyer 1864-1940 Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in India from 1912 until 1919. O'Dwyer endorsed General Reginald Dyer's action regarding the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and termed it a "correct action".
Reginald 'Rex' Edward Harry Dyer 1864-1927 Was an officer of the British Army who, as a temporary brigadier general, was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar.
Marcia Sherwood A missionary teacher, who was severely beaten in the street three days before the Amritsar massacre.
Subhas Chandra Bose 1879-1945 Was one of India's great nationalist leaders of the first half of the 20th century. He led the revolutionary Indian National Army during World War II.
Sir Stafford Cripps 1889-1952 A British Labour politician of the first half of the 20th century. During World War II he served in a number of positions in the wartime coalition, including Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Minister of Aircraft Production.
Sir Cyril Radcliffe 1899-1977 A British lawyer and Law Lord best known for his role in the partition of British India. He was given the chairmanship of the two boundary committees set up with the passing of the Indian Independence Act. He was faced with the daunting task of drawing the borders for the new nations of Pakistan and India
Lord Minto Viceroy: 1905-1910 In 1905, Lord Minto was appointed Viceroy and Governor-General of India, retiring in 1910. In this, he followed in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, the first Lord Minto.
Lord Chelmsford Viceroy: 1916-1921 A British statesman who served Viceroy of India from 1916 to 1921, where he was responsible for the creation of the Montagu-Chelmsford reforms.
Lord Irwin Viceroy: 1926-1931 The Governor-General of India or the Viceroy headed the British administration in India. After Indian independence, they became the representative of the Indian monarch.
Lord Linlithgow Viceroy: 1936-1944 A British statesman who served as Governor-General and Viceroy of India from 1936 to 1943. In 1926 he was Chairman of the Royal Commission on Agriculture in India. In the 1930's he was also chairman of the select committee on Indian constitutional reform.
Lord Wavell Viceroy: 1944-1947 In January 1943 Wavell had been promoted to field marshal. When Linlinthgow retired as viceroy in the summer of 1943, Wavell was chosen to replace him. One of Wavell's first actions in office was to address the Bengal famine of 1943 by ordering the army to distribute relief supplies to the starving rural Bengalis.
Lord Mountbatten Viceroy: March 1947 - August 1947 British naval officer and colonial administrator who was supreme Allied commander in southeast Asia (1943-1946) and the last viceroy and governor-general of India (1947). He was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army.
