Question Answer
What spectrum are X-Rays a part of and where do they sit? The electromagnetic spectrum and they sit between gamma and UV rays
Do they have a long or short wave length? Short
What do X-Rays cause? Ionisation
Why can X-Rays cause cancer? Because they can knock off electrons from atoms in the body
What can X-Rays be used as a treatment for? Cancer
What 2 substances absorb X-Rays? Bone and metal
How do X-Ray images work? The bone that is thought to be broken is placed on top of the photographic film. X-Rays are emitted and any film that doesn't have bone in front of it will go black but places with bone will stay white. You are able to see the break as it will be black
Do X-rays have a high or low frequency? High
What is the rough size of a X-ray wavelength? About the diameter of an atom
What does CCD stand for? Charge-coupled devices
What are CCDs used for? To form an x-ray electronically
What are CCDs and how do they work? silicone clips that are about the size of a postage stamp. They are split up into grids of millions of identical pixels. The CCD detects x-rays and produce electronic signals what are used to form high resolution images
How are x-rays used to treat cancer? The x-rays are focused on the tumor using a wide beam. The beam is rotated around the patient with the tumor at the center. This minimises the exposure of normal cells to radiation, and so reduces the chances of damaging the rest of the body
What do CT scans produce? High resolution images of hard and soft tissue
