Question Answer
List some social impacts of drought. (Hint: there are 5) Dry soil - unstable house foundations Poor crop yield - food shortages Lack of water - dehydration Increased risk of diseases - cholera Few agricultural prospects - displacement / migration in search of food and income
List some economic impacts of drought. (Hint: there are 7) Poor crop (yield) - higher prices Poor crop yield - low income for farmers Higher meat and dairy prices Fewer jobs Less corn (ethanol) - Higher fuel prices Drop in tourism Lower availability of goods (no exchange)
What is the economic impact of low water levels? In inland docks and river systems the same boasts can't be used
List 4 environmental impacts of drought. Desertification Malnourished plants - not attractive environment Fewer pollinating insects Dried out vegetation - more wildfires
Why does drought lead to desertification? The dry soil causes root damage - the lack of root system causes cracks in the soil - when windy the top layer of soil is easily removed / swept away - future rain doesn't soak in as the surface is too hard
Why are there fewer pollinating insects as a result of drought? (Hint: there are 2 stages) Natural plants (not crops) die first so there is not as much pollen for the insects THEN there are few crops as well AND more insecticides to save low yield
Name and locate a climatic hazard in an LEDC region. (Bonus: how many countries are in this region?) 2012 (and 2010, 2005) Sahel region South of Sahara desert 12 countries including Niger, Chad, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso
How many people were affected by the 2010 drought? 10 milllion
What causes drought in the Sahel region? Lack of rainfall
What factors worsen the impact of drought in the Sahel region? (Hint: there are 4) Lack of Government intervention Mali conflict Tradition (many children) Change from traditional seed - maize Reliance on agriculture (80%)
Why did farmers recently chose to plant maize in favour of the traditional seed? Why is this bad? Maize had higher value Traditional crop was drought resistant - maize is not
What are the effects on agriculture of drought in the Sahel region? (Hint: there are 4) Crop production reduced by 26% Starvation of livestock (goats, sheep, cattle) - no meat or milk Price of grain doubled Grain stores running out - eating seeds
What are the social effects of drought in the Sahel region? (Hint: there are 5) Food emergencies declared Migration Death 15% more malnourished 1/3 of children in Burkina Faso won't reach full growth potential
How did the process of desertification further complicate matters for the Sahel region? When rains eventually came the ground was too hard to absorb them Flood waters blocked roads - difficult to deliver aid
According to the UN, how many people are at risk from severe food shortages? 19 million
What short term solutions to drought were offered in the Sahel? (Hint: there are 5) Red cross convoys - check for malnutrition Aid care packages e.g. food supplies Drought resistance seeds distributed Government aid Focus on vegetable gardens
What were the results of foreign aid charities' appeals? They received 50% of $1.6 billion dollars requested
What was the problem with the Government's aid? Only when wanting to win votes for rural areas
What problems do drought resistant seeds pose? (Hint: there are 4) Ethical concerns about GM Reliance on other countries' technology Too expensive for average farmer Must be bought yearly (don't produce GM crop seeds)
What long term solutions to drought were considered and/or applied in the Sahel? (Hint: there are 2) Family planning clinics (reduce number of children) Reduction of carbon emissions
