Question Answer
What is MASS? Mass is the amount of matter a substance contains. - It's measured in G or KG. - The mass of an object remains constant. -It's measured on a digital balance.
What is WEIGHT? Weight is the pull of gravity on an object. - It's measured in N. - Weight depends on the force of gravity. - It's measured with a Newton meter.
What is VOLUME? Volume is the amount of space an object/substance contains. - It's measured in mm³, cm³, m³. -Volume of a liquid can be measured in mm and l. - Liquid volumes are found using a measuring cylinder. - The volume of a uniform object can be found using V = l x b x h
What is DENSITY? Gravity is a force that pulls two objects towards each other. - On Earth, the pull of gravity is 10n/kg. - On the moon, g is smaller because the moon is smaller. - In space, g is zero so objects are weightless.
How would you use a measuring cylinder to find the volume of an irregular object? - An important rule is to get down level + read the bottom of the meniscus. 1. Fill displacement can until overflowing. Allow to drain until it stops dripping. 2. Place measuring cylinder below spout + lower irregular object gently. 3. Collect displaced water. 4. Volume of water collected = Volume of object.
How would you use a measuring cylinder to find the volume of a piece of metal? 1. Take cylinder + fill it w/ certain amount of water. 2. Allow excess water to pour out. 3. Measure the water. 4. Gently place pipe under water. 5. Measure change in volume of water. 6. Subtract the difference.
What is DENSITY? Density is the mass per unit volume of a material. - It can be measured in kg/m³ or g/cm³ .
How would you find the density of a regular solid material? 1. Measure + record the dimensions of each cuboid. 2. Calculate volume in cm³. 3. Place each cuboid on digital balances + record mass in g. 4. Calculate density for each cuboid. 5. Calculate an average value for the density of the material.
How would you find the density of an irregular material? 1. Place material on digital balance + record its mass. 2. Pour water in displacement can + allow excess water to drip out so water level is below spout. 3. Place measuring cylinder under spout. 4. Gently lower material into water. 5. Collect water displaced + measure its volume. 6. Calculate density of material.
How would you find the density of copper? 1. Place 15 coins on digital balance + record their mass. 2. Obtain volume of the coin by displacement in a 100ml measuring cylinder.
How would you find the density of a liquid? 1. Place a 100ml measuring cylinder onto a digital balance. 2. Zero the balance w/ the cylinder in place. 3. Pour 20ml of water into the cylinder. 4. Record the mass + volume of liquid in a table. 5. Carefully, add water into the measuring cylinder and record the mass of 40ml, 60ml, 80ml and 100ml of water in the same way.
