Question Answer
WAN Wide Area Network A network of computers where they are connected generally quite far apart. Can be used to connect cities or even countries.
LAN Local Area Network A network of computers where they are connected within a set area. Often used in schools or offices. Can also be used to share peripherals.
PAN Personal Area Network A network of computers used to move data on several different devices. Such as Bluetooth.
VPN Virtual Private Network A network used to connect to a private network, like a secure business internal network. It also extends a private network across a public network like the internet.
MAC Address A unique address a computer makes using the ID number of the adapter and the adapter serial number.
Protocol A standard used to define a method of transmitting data over a network such as a LAN. Each protocol has its own method of how data is formatted when sent and what to do with it once received, how that data is compressed or how to check for errors in data.
Packet A segment of data sent from one computer or device to another over a network.
Hostname The unique name / address of the computer you're currently logged into or visiting.
Checksum A number that is calculated when data is sent from one place to another. When the data and checksum arrives at its destination, the data is checked to verify the checksum matches the one provided. If it is a match, the data is believed to be error free.
Even Parity The parity-checking mode in which each set of transmitted bits must have an even number of set bits.
Odd Parity The parity-checking mode in which each set of transmitted bits must have an odd number of set bits.
Bus Topology A single main cable to which computers are connected to.
Ring Topology All computers are connected in a circle.
Star Topology Any computer can connect to other computers.
Mesh Topology Each computer can connect to other computers.
