Define urbanisation. Urbanisation is the increase in the number of people living in towns and cities compared to the number of people living in the countryside.
What products did Birmingham manufacture in the 19th century? Jewellery, guns, buttons and brass.
Give an example of where a new estate was built for the workers? Small Heath.
Define suburbanisation. Suburbanisationis the growth of a town or city into the surrounding countryside, which usually joins it to villages on its outskirts making one large built-up area.
What time period (year) did suburbanisation occur in Birmingham? 1920s/ 1930s
What type of houses were built? Semi-detached.
What did these new estates lack? Shops and clinics.
Why were the new estates laid out with wide tree-lined roads and grass verges? To make the area look nicer.
Define counter-urbanisation. Counter-urbanisation is the movement of people from cities to countryside areas.
What is CDA? A CDA is a comprehensive development area where the whole urban landscape was demolished before being rebuilt on a planned basis.
How many CDAs were created in Birmingham and what did they demolish? Five and the terraced houses in the inner city.
People moved to the edge of the urban area. Give an example of a plave they moved to. Redditch.
Define re-urbanisation. Re-urbanisation is the movement of people back into urban areas, usually after a city has been modernised.
What time period did re-urbanisation occus in Birmingham? After 1990.
Why do people want to live in the city centre again? Close to work and amenities.
What has been built by the canal in Birmingham for the people who have moved back to the city? Apartments.
New centres such as the Mailbox has been developed. What is the Mailbox? Mixture of shopping, leisure, offices and appartments.
