Place Theory Different parts of the basilar membrane are stimulated for different frequencies
Frequency Theory Cells fire in proportion to the frequency of a sound
What are the three causes of deafness? 1) Conduction 2) Nerve 3) Stimulation
Deafness by Conduction Caused by damage to the eardrum or bones
Deafness by Nerve Damage Loss of sensors (hair cells or damage to the auditory nerve)
Deafness by Stimulation Overuse or overexposure to loud noise can damage hair cells (ringing in ears after a concert)
Doppler Effect An increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other
Chemical Sensing Certain molecules (keys) will be received by certain receptors (locks)
Smell is the only sense to bypass the Thalamus
Where are smell receptors located? Olfactory bulb
What do the touch receptors pick up? And where are touch sensors receptors? 1) Pressure, pain, temperature 2) The skin
What does vestibular sense control? And where are the receptors located? 1) Balance 2) Semicircular canal
What does kinesthetic sense control? And where are the receptors located? 1) Body position 2) Muscles and tendons
