Relationship and Couple counselling isn’t always advisable or effective for relationships in which violence is present, and many therapists maybe unwilling to see couples if violence is occurred. Individual counselling, however, can help a victim of domestic abuse see the pattern of violence in the relationship and develop a safety plan. Therapies like group therapy, art therapy, music therapy or animal therapy may also help the victim to recover through the assault.

Children who witness domestic violence may have difficulty in sleeping, perform poorly in academics, behave in defiance towards their parents and other adults, or develop somatic symptoms like headaches and stomach aches. Play therapy and Sand therapy, for example are used for kids who may have difficulty verbalizing their feelings, and parent-child interaction therapy is specially designed for children with behavioural issues.
