Question Answer
Brief Description Remote island off NW coast of Scotland. Self-sufficient community with single storey thatched cottage and 1 acre of land. Tough existence – brief description and the population fell from 200 in 1700 to 0 in 1930
Causes of leaving? • Left to fight at war • Radio/ships broadened horizons • Young men left and therefore BR  • Winter of 1929/30 very severe and food was running out
Effects? • Population aged – Young men left • Population not being replaced – Birth rate decreased • Food decreased – lack of able bodies to produce food • No one left in the community – after winter of 1929/30 • Deterioration in quality and number of housing • Younger population left therefore manual labour decreased
How have they overcome the problems? In 1965 the Highlands and Islands Board (HIDB) was created and this was replaced by the Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE) in 1991. Its aim was to regenerate the whole of the Western Isles. Money came from the public and private sector plus grants from the European Union. They have: • Built airports, ferry ports and roads to develop transport links. • They built the Skye Bridge to improve links between the mainland and the island of Skye. • Young people have been trained to take over and manage the crofts. • They have funded the development of data processing to market business opportunities. • ~They have trained people in the use of IT skills. They have hoped to regenerate the area through the increased use of IT whilst promoting the quality of life.
How successful has the regeneration been? The population of this area reached an all time low in 1961 of 330 000 but since then it has risen steadily to a total of 370 000 in 1991.
