What is functionalism? The theory that all aspects of a society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society.
Give 3 key studies for functionalism. - - -
What is organic analogy? Organic analogy is the belief that society should work like the human body. Each part doing its own bit to keep the person alive.
What are the strengths of functionalism? -Encourages family support - Supports correct socialisation of children - Policies increase the welfare of children and families
What are the weakness's of Functionalism? - No recognition of the dark side of the family (eg. domestic abuse) - Hints at Homophobia -Pre-determined society - Inequalities between men and women - Not accepting of new family types (lone parents, same sex or cohabiting couples)
What is the New Right view of family? That the only 'right' and acceptable family type is a nuclear family.
