Question Answer
three contextual studies of GandG whether animals communicate or not debate (bee waggle dance) chimp with lexigram- Chomsky Bryan in 1963
define communication passage of info. from 1 individual or group to another involving signals (sounds/symbols) that themselves are meaningless but when organised into combinations-infinate number of messages
can animals communicate or not debate? yes- bee waggle dance. tell one another the direction in which they got the pollen by waggling taking into account the sun moving 1 degree every four minutes
teaching a chimp a language using a lexigram electric keyboard of symbols-lexigram, asked a chimp to point at a word and he did, including 'noodles' 'good' 'lemonade'
what did Chomsky argue? 1957, humans have special part of our brain meaning we are programmed to learn a language, unique to humans therefore animals are incapable of learning a language
Bryan 1963, chimps have diff vocal apparatus to us- only used when extremely happy or stressed. therefore unethical to teach a chimp a verbal language- hence ASL
why were chimps chosen? due to them being highly intelligent and social creatures, being known to have good relationships with humans and being good with their hands.
GandG aims aimed to see if a chimp could learn ASL and to bring him up as though he was a deaf child in order for language to be acquired naturally.
