Round the numbers to easy numbers, usually ones with 1 or 2 significant figures. Use the symbol this means 'approximately equal to' When multiplying and dividing, don't approximate a number zero, use 0.1, 0.01 e.t.c Example:£1.49 + £0.49 + £1.09£1.50 + £0.50 + £1.00 = £3.00However, when adding or subtracting, very small numbers can be approximated to zero.
