This is an actual student response from the 2013 January Higher Paper [Paper 1]What makes it a good (14/16 mark) is: It identifies relevant 'language techniques' It then gives examples of the 'language technique' being used - this is in the form of a 'direct quotation' It then develops this identification/evidence link by adding a 'relevant explanation of effect' on the reader. N.B. a 'relevant explanation' of effect goes beyond simple comments such as 'makes you interested' or 'makes you read on' - these are often Band 2 'some attempt' territory It is also consistent, in that it does the good things time after time. The response follows a very simple pattern but shows consistently good application of the basics that, pretty soon, goes beyond Band 3 answer ('Clear and Relevant') to Band 4 ('Perceptive and Detailed').
